Turkish chess prodigy Isik Can, 19, has become Türkiye’s 17th grandmaster after a strong performance at the 2024 US Masters Chess Tournament, held from November 27 to December 1. Scoring 6.5 points in nine rounds, Can met the final criteria for the prestigious grandmaster title.
The Turkish Chess Federation lauded Can’s achievement, highlighting his rapid rise since earning the international master title at just 13 years old in 2018.
The grandmaster title, the pinnacle of chess rankings, requires a rating of 2500 or higher. Super grandmasters exceed a 2700 rating, marking them among the world’s elite.
