The Israel Ministry of Defense, in collaboration with the Tehkumah Authority, the IDF, and the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council, has launched an advanced security pilot program to bolster protection for communities along the Gaza border. This strategic initiative is designed to reinforce physical defenses, enhance the capabilities of local rapid-response teams, and integrate cutting-edge technological defense solutions.
Currently, the pilot is active in five key frontline communities near the Gaza border, with plans to expand it to all critical areas in the region. Funded with a budget of NIS 715 million from the Tehkumah Authority, this program is a proactive measure following the events of October 7, aimed at restoring safety and confidence among returning residents.
Developed over recent months, the comprehensive security plan includes strengthening local rapid-response teams, upgrading physical barriers such as fences and gates, and deploying advanced technologies like drones, command centers, and a specialized civilian communication network. This network will directly connect local response teams with regional councils and IDF command centers.
The pilot was officially launched with a simulation exercise on Monday, August 12, 2024. The event was attended by senior officials, including the Director General of the Israel Ministry of Defense, Maj. Gen. (Res.) Eyal Zamir, alongside Maj. Gen. (Res.) Mickey Edelstein, Brig. Gen. Avi Rosenfeld, and representatives from the Tehkumah Authority, the Home Front Command, and the IDF.
Maj. Gen. (Res.) Eyal Zamir, Director General of the Ministry of Defense, emphasized the importance of the initiative: “Following the Defense Minister’s directive, we are implementing a civilian-focused operational concept to restore security and trust among the residents. The rapid-response teams, who showed extraordinary bravery on October 7, are central to this effort. We are committed to their continued training and equipping them with the most advanced tools.”
Acting Head of the Tehkumah Authority, Yossi Shelley, highlighted the significance of the pilot: “This new security initiative is a crucial step in ensuring peace and personal safety for residents in the region. The Tehkumah Authority has already invested approximately NIS 715 million in defense systems and related measures, and we remain dedicated to providing the highest level of security for these communities.”
Itamar Revivo, Head of the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council, expressed his gratitude: “The new defense strategy, developed in response to the events of October 7, is vital for those living on the Gaza border. I extend my thanks to the Director General of the Ministry of Defense and his team, particularly Maj. Gen. (Res.) Roni Numa, Maj. Gen. (Res.)
