Israel and Syria Agree to Ceasefire After Deadly Clashes in Druze Region
Sweida, Syria – July 19, 2025 — Israel and Syria have reached a ceasefire after violent clashes in southern Syria’s Druze-majority Sweida region left over 300 dead and dozens injured. The temporary truce, brokered by U.S. officials, follows days of Israeli airstrikes and intense fighting between Syrian government forces, Druze militias, and other armed groups.
The U.S. Ambassador to Turkey, Tom Barrack, confirmed the agreement on Friday, urging all ethnic groups to unite and “build a new Syrian identity.” The ceasefire allows Syrian forces limited access to the area for 48 hours to stabilize the situation and assist civilians.
Israel says its strikes targeted Syrian troops and Iran-backed militias to protect the Druze community. Eyewitnesses report widespread destruction and civilian displacement.
International organizations are calling for urgent humanitarian aid, warning of worsening conditions. The UN and EU have welcomed the ceasefire but stressed the need for a long-term solution to prevent further bloodshed.
