Israeli Air Strike on Gaza School Shelter Kills 10, Including a Child

Fire Engulfs Displacement Shelter Amid Ongoing Air Raids Across Gaza Strip

April 24, 2025 | Gaza City (News Desk – Press Update) — At least 10 people, including one child, were killed in an Israeli air strike on a Gaza City school being used as a shelter for displaced families, according to the Palestinian Civil Defence.

The strike, which took place late Tuesday, set off a fire that swept through parts of the Yafa School, a facility that had been repurposed to house Palestinians fleeing heavy bombardment across the Strip. Emergency teams said they recovered bodies from the charred remains early Wednesday.

Footage shared online captured harrowing scenes of destruction — scorched tents, melted tarpaulins, and blackened cots scattered amid the wreckage. Witnesses described chaotic efforts to flee the inferno as it consumed the temporary shelter.

The attack came during a night of intensified Israeli shelling and air raids targeting multiple districts, including the Tuffah neighbourhood, where two residential buildings were also struck. Civil defence units called for immediate international support to rescue civilians feared trapped beneath the rubble, though access has been severely restricted due to military-imposed “no-go zones.”

Further fatalities were confirmed in northern Gaza’s Jabalia refugee camp, where two people — including a child — died in an earlier airstrike. In southern Gaza, a drone attack hit shelters in the al-Mawasi area, killing one and wounding several. Al-Mawasi had previously been designated a humanitarian “safe zone.”

Israel resumed its offensive in March, tightening its grip with a full aid blockade on the Gaza Strip, citing continued efforts to recover hostages held by Hamas.

The rising civilian death toll has drawn renewed international concern, as humanitarian access remains limited and shelters continue to be targeted.
