The 46th Istanbul Marathon, recognized as the only intercontinental marathon in the world, is set to take place this Sunday. Participants will start by crossing the 15 July Martyrs’ Bridge, traversing various historic sites such as Dolmabahce Palace, Galata Bridge, New Mosque, Spice Bazaar, Sirkeci Train Station, Topkapi Palace, and Gulhane Park over a distance of 42 kilometers (26 miles).
The marathon will conclude in Sultanahmet Square, with expectations that over 40,000 runners, including a record-breaking 14,000 women, will participate. Last year, Kenyan runner Panuel Mkungo claimed victory in the men’s category, finishing in 2 hours, 10 minutes, and 35 seconds, while Beatrice Cheptoo won the women’s category in 2 hours, 27 minutes, and 9 seconds.
The idea for the marathon originated in 1973 after the Bosphorus Bridge was built, and the inaugural race took place on April 1, 1979, with a small group of runners. Over the years, the marathon has evolved under various organizations and now holds a “Gold Label” from World Athletics, indicating its high standards and international recognition
