ITA Airways First EU Carrier to Resume Libya Flights

ITA Airways has launched a historic new route between Rome and Tripoli, marking the first direct flight between the two cities in years. The inaugural flight, ITA Airways flight AZ868, departed from Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino Airport at 09:25 and arrived in Tripoli at 11:58, using an Airbus A319-100. The return flight left Tripoli at 2:08 PM, signaling the start of a twice-weekly service on Thursdays and Sundays.

This new connection strengthens both economic and cultural ties between Italy and Libya, providing much-needed connectivity between the two nations. ITA Airways General Manager Andrea Benassi expressed that the flight demonstrates the airline’s commitment to enhancing Italy’s global connectivity while supporting the growth of business communities in Libya.

Libya’s Ambassador to Italy, Muhanad Saeid Younus, attended the launch and welcomed the new flight as a symbol of strengthening bilateral relations. He called it a “new beginning” that opens up avenues for economic, commercial, and cultural cooperation, with hopes for many more successes between the two nations.

This route is part of ITA Airways’ broader expansion plan, which now includes 55 destinations for the winter season. With a fleet of 102 aircraft and more on the way, ITA Airways is positioning Rome as a key hub connecting Europe and Africa, offering greater opportunities for travel and business across the Mediterranean.
