Italian Officials on Alert Amid Rising Oil Prices
Cabinet Ministers Discuss Fuel Challenges
Italian government ministers are on “advanced alert” due to rising oil prices linked to the Middle East conflict, according to ANSA. The alert followed a morning meeting with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti, and Environment and Energy Security Minister Gilberto Pichetto, ahead of a scheduled Cabinet session focused on fuel policy.
Salvini Calls for Urgent Measures
Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini emphasized the need to reduce fuel prices below €1.90 ($2.19) per liter, especially for diesel. He highlighted several proposals under consideration, including a price cap, adjustments to excise duties, and discussions in Brussels regarding taxation policies and the European Green Deal.
Salvini criticized the EU’s Green Deal as “truly suicidal” under current circumstances, stressing the need for practical measures to protect Italian consumers and the economy.
Dialogue with Russia Considered Essential
On the potential review of the Russian gas blockade, Salvini said Italy must “address one thing at a time” but insisted that reopening dialogue with Russia is essential. “The United States has suspended sanctions on those who buy Russian gas and oil, benefiting them. Meanwhile, Italy faces losses,” he warned.
Impact of Middle East Tensions
The rise in oil prices coincides with escalating tensions in the Middle East. Since Feb. 28, the US and Israel have conducted a joint offensive against Iran, resulting in around 1,300 deaths, including then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran has retaliated with drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US forces, disrupting infrastructure, aviation, and global markets.
