Opposition lawmakers in Italy have voiced support for the Global Sumud Flotilla’s planned “Spring 2026 Mission,” describing it as a humanitarian effort and calling for guarantees of safe passage.
The initiative was presented during a press conference in the Italian Chamber of Deputies, attended by opposition MPs, flotilla representatives, pro-Palestinian activists and civil society groups.
Antonio Ferrara of the Five Star Movement said public backing for the mission highlights a growing disconnect between citizens and governments on humanitarian issues, describing the flotilla as a demonstration of solidarity.
His colleague Stefania Ascari, speaking remotely, also characterized the initiative as a significant humanitarian undertaking.
From the Democratic Party, Laura Boldrini expressed support for the mission and said lawmakers would closely follow its progress, urging institutional efforts to ensure its safety during the voyage.
Boldrini also criticized the European Union’s inability to agree on suspending its trade agreement with Israel, despite backing from several member states, arguing that continued inaction has political consequences.
Marco Grimaldi of the Italian Left party referenced a previous mission in 2025, saying it had faced pressure from Italy’s right-wing government to abandon its course. He stressed that the current mission aims to reach Palestinian territories and called for international media access to Gaza.
He also stated that ongoing conditions in the region, including occupation and restrictions, make justice and peace unattainable.
Global Sumud Flotilla spokesperson Maria Elena Delia said the mission was being relaunched due to what she described as an ongoing blockade, insisting the initiative is peaceful and not provocative.
She argued that despite claims of stability, Gaza remains under blockade and occupation, and said continued action was necessary.
Delia also claimed that hundreds of people have been killed since the ceasefire period began, adding that previous missions had attempted to challenge the blockade.
Organizers said the situation reflects a long-standing crisis, with Susan Abdallah stating that the conflict has persisted for decades and placing responsibility on those involved in the initiative to act.
