Kuwait Shortens Prayer Time to Conserve Electricity

Energy Ministry’s Request Prompts Religious Affairs Authority to Cut Mosque Power Use

Kuwait City, April 20 – In a move aimed at reducing national power consumption, Kuwait’s Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs has announced new guidelines to shorten prayer durations in mosques across the country.

The decision comes in response to a formal request by the Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy, urging all public sectors to implement energy-saving practices amid increasing demand and resource strain.

Under the new directive, Imams have been instructed to limit prayer times, including sermons, to conserve electricity used in lighting, cooling, and sound systems within mosques.

Officials emphasized that the shortened prayer schedule will maintain religious obligations while supporting national efforts to manage power usage more efficiently, especially during peak consumption months.

The move reflects a broader initiative by the Kuwaiti government to promote energy sustainability without compromising essential services or spiritual practices.
