Lebanon Seeks Friendly Relations with Syria’s New Government

Lebanon expressed hopes for strong, friendly ties with Syria’s newly formed government following a phone call between Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdullah Bou Habib and his Syrian counterpart, Assad al-Shibani. Bou Habib congratulated al-Shibani on his appointment and emphasized Lebanon’s commitment to Syria’s unity, territorial integrity, and the right to self-determination. He also conveyed Lebanon’s desire to build solid neighborly relations, benefiting both nations. Bou Habib voiced his intention to visit Syria, with al-Shibani warmly welcoming the idea. The two officials agreed to meet early next year to address shared concerns and priorities. This diplomatic gesture comes after a tumultuous period for Syria, with President Bashar Assad fleeing the country following the fall of Damascus, ending decades of Baath Party rule.
