Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said Tuesday that a two-state solution remains the only path toward achieving lasting peace in the Middle East.
Addressing the UN General Assembly in New York, Nauseda said Lithuania supports international efforts to preserve and strengthen the ceasefire in Gaza.
He referred to a comprehensive plan aimed at ending the conflict, including the proposed deployment of a temporary international stabilization force, saying it provides a framework for future steps.
Nauseda also stressed the need for the complete demilitarization of non-state armed groups and called for humanitarian assistance to reach people in Gaza safely and without restrictions.
Turning to the war in Ukraine, Nauseda described Russia as a major threat to the international order. He noted that the conflict following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 has continued for longer than World War I.
He cited figures claiming Russia has suffered around 1.5 million military casualties while gaining approximately 0.3% of Ukraine’s territory, with more than 400,000 soldiers reportedly killed or wounded.
Nauseda said Ukraine continues to exist as an independent state despite the scale of the conflict and argued that Russia’s broader ambitions extend beyond Europe into Africa and Asia.
He also highlighted what he described as increasing hybrid attacks, disinformation and sabotage across Europe, along with reported violations of Lithuanian and other European airspace by military drones.
The Lithuanian president further warned that artificial intelligence could increase existing security risks. He said Lithuania believes the future development of AI should not be shaped by authoritarian control, technological pressure or the harmful exploitation of data.
