All Accused in 2008 Malegaon Blast Acquitted by NIA Court
NEW DELHI, August 1, 2025 — A special NIA court finally acquitted seven accused in Malegaon blast.
The explosion occurred on September 29, 2008, killing six and injuring over 100.
Notably, those cleared include Pragya Thakur, Col. Purohit, Upadhyay, and four others.
The court stated the prosecution failed to link them with direct evidence.
Therefore, it ruled in their favor after years of prolonged legal scrutiny.
Initially, the case was investigated by ATS chief Hemant Karkare before 26/11.
Authorities alleged an IED was planted on Thakur’s LML Freedom bike.
However, Thakur argued she had sold the bike before the attack occurred.
Moreover, the court agreed there was no proof of her current ownership.
Investigators also claimed chassis tampering and a fake number plate existed.
But the judge concluded those claims lacked clarity and supporting forensic records.
Significantly, no fingerprints or DNA were collected on time from the site.
As a result, the forensic lab’s findings were found unreliable and inconsistent.
Furthermore, the judge remarked, “No religion can support violence or terrorist activities.”
The prosecution did establish that a blast occurred and caused real casualties.
Yet it failed to prove who planted the explosive or used the bike.
Earlier, prosecutor Rohini Salian resigned, alleging pressure to go easy on accused.
Meanwhile, Thakur told reporters her life was ruined by false legal accusations.
She added her spiritual devotion helped her survive this 17-year-long emotional trauma.
In conclusion, the court emphasized the importance of evidence-based terror investigations nationwide.
