Moscow Court Penalizes Google for Violating Content Laws

Google Faces New Fine in Russia Over Restricted Content

Russia Fines Google for Failing to Block Prohibited Content

MOSCOW

A court in Moscow has fined Google 11.4 million rubles (about $145,000) for failing to restrict access to certain banned online content.

Court Finds Violation of Russian Law

The case was reviewed Tuesday in Moscow. After examining the complaint, the court ruled that Google violated Russian regulations because it did not block content that authorities had already classified as prohibited.

Officials said the ruling reflects the government’s ongoing enforcement of laws that regulate online platforms and digital content in Russia.

Series of Previous Penalties

This is not the first time Russian authorities have penalized the company. In recent years, courts have fined Google multiple times for similar violations.

Earlier cases involved the company’s failure to remove restricted content and its refusal to store the personal data of Russian users on local servers, as required by national law.

Large Fine Issued Earlier This Year

Most recently, on Feb. 27, Russian authorities imposed a much larger penalty of 16 billion rubles on Google after the company failed to pay earlier fines.

The latest ruling highlights continuing tensions between Russian regulators and major global technology companies operating in the country.
