Musk Firms Sue Apple and OpenAI

X and xAI Take Legal Action Against Tech Giants

Musk’s Companies File Lawsuit Against Apple and OpenAI Over Alleged Anticompetitive Practices

ISTANBUL

U.S. billionaire Elon Musk’s companies, social media platform X and AI startup xAI, have filed a lawsuit against Apple and OpenAI, accusing the tech giants of engaging in an “anticompetitive scheme” aimed at limiting competition in the artificial intelligence sector.

According to the complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas, Musk’s firms allege that Apple and OpenAI colluded to maintain monopolies in the smartphone and generative AI markets. The lawsuit claims Apple has favored OpenAI by integrating its ChatGPT chatbot into Apple devices while suppressing rival AI chatbots, including xAI’s Grok, in the App Store rankings.

The complaint states, “Unless the court intervenes to stop Apple and OpenAI’s unlawful actions, competition will continue to be hindered, and competitors like the plaintiffs will suffer the consequences.”

Earlier this month, Musk publicly criticized Apple on X, calling its behavior an “unequivocal antitrust violation” and alleging that the company’s practices make it impossible for any AI firm besides OpenAI to reach the top of the App Store rankings.

Apple and OpenAI began collaborating last year to integrate ChatGPT into Mac computers, iPhones, and iPads. Following this partnership, competing chatbot applications, including DeepSeek and Perplexity, reportedly ranked highly in the App Store, according to responses on X’s Community Notes.

This lawsuit marks the latest chapter in the ongoing tensions between Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but left in 2018, previously filed a lawsuit against Altman and the company, alleging that OpenAI prioritized business interests over its original mission of developing AI “for the benefit of humanity.”
