Hundreds Missing After Boat Sinks Near Thailand-Malaysia Border
Langkawi, Malaysia, November 10, 2025 — Malaysian authorities report that hundreds of people remain missing after a boat carrying about 300 passengers sank near the Thailand-Malaysia border on Sunday. So far, rescuers have saved 10 survivors and recovered one body.
Rescue Efforts Underway
First Admiral Romli Mustafa, director of the maritime authority for Kedah and Perlis, said rescuers continue to search the waters. He added that teams might still find more victims nearly three days after the incident.
Survivors and Victims Identified
Rescuers pulled three men from Myanmar, two Rohingya men, and one Bangladeshi man from the sea. The recovered body belongs to a Rohingya woman, according to state media Bernama, citing Kedah Police Chief Adzli Abu Shah.
Rohingya Passengers and Background
Many passengers were Rohingya, a Muslim minority that frequently flees Myanmar to escape persecution and denial of citizenship.
Authorities explained that the passengers first boarded a large vessel but transferred onto three smaller boats near the border to avoid detection. Each smaller boat carried roughly 100 people. Rescue teams are still searching for the other two boats, and their status remains unknown.
