European Leaders Denounce Massive Russian Assault

European officials strongly criticized Russia following a new wave of missile and drone strikes across Ukraine, calling the attacks a serious escalation in the ongoing conflict and reaffirming continued support for Kyiv.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described the strikes as evidence of Russia’s disregard for civilian lives and diplomatic efforts, stating that additional European assistance for Ukraine’s air defense systems was under preparation. She emphasized that attacks targeting civilians reflected weakness rather than power.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas accused Moscow of increasingly relying on terror-style tactics against urban populations following battlefield difficulties. She confirmed that EU foreign ministers would soon discuss measures aimed at increasing international pressure on Russia.

French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the assault and criticized the reported use of the Oreshnik ballistic missile, describing the action as another sign of Russia’s deepening military and political isolation. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also denounced the attacks and reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and defense.

Irish Foreign Minister Helen McEntee labeled the deliberate targeting of civilians a war crime, while Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot said the strikes demonstrated no genuine interest in peace negotiations from Moscow.

According to Ukrainian authorities, missiles and drones struck several regions, including Kyiv and nearby areas, damaging residential buildings, infrastructure, and government facilities. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russia launched nearly 90 missiles and around 600 drones during the assault, resulting in casualties and widespread destruction.

Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed the operation was a large-scale retaliatory strike targeting Ukrainian military and defense-industrial facilities. Moscow stated the attacks were carried out in response to recent Ukrainian operations in Russian-controlled territories, including incidents reported in the Luhansk region.
