Washington D.C. – June 6, 2024: NATO, celebrating its 75th anniversary, remains a dynamic and crucial alliance for the United States and the world, according to Julianne Smith, the U.S. permanent representative to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Speaking to the Defense Writers Group, Smith emphasized the alliance’s continued relevance and the upcoming NATO summit in Washington this July.
Despite its age, NATO is far from outdated, Smith stated. U.S. polls show that two-thirds of Americans support NATO, reflecting a strong belief in the alliance’s value. However, she acknowledged that a third of Americans still question its necessity.
Smith, who has undertaken listening tours in the U.S. Midwest, found some public confusion regarding NATO’s actions, particularly in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Nonetheless, her interactions in Ohio and Michigan reinforced her belief that NATO remains largely a bipartisan issue.
A key focus for Smith is educating young Americans about NATO’s importance. She noted that many in the 18-to-25 age range may not fully grasp why NATO was established or its contributions to U.S. national security. Addressing this disconnect is crucial, especially given misconceptions that the alliance is outdated.
The issue of burden sharing within NATO also remains pertinent. In 2014, only three NATO countries met the defense spending goal of 2% of GDP. Today, following pressure from Presidents Obama, Trump, and Biden, 23 of the 32 NATO allies have reached or exceeded this target. Smith highlighted that this shared effort allows the U.S. to maintain its global responsibilities more effectively.
NATO continues to evolve, tackling new challenges, strategies, and technologies to enhance the safety of its member nations. Smith underscored the importance of communicating NATO’s ongoing relevance, a key objective for the upcoming summit.
“We just have to work to continue to get the message out on why NATO matters,” Smith said, stressing the alliance’s role in fostering global security and cooperation.–News Desk
