Washington D.C. – June 6, 2024: In a significant meeting at the Pentagon, Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks and Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Christopher Grady hosted their UK counterparts, Permanent Secretary David Williams and Vice Chief of the Defence Staff Lieutenant General Gwyn Jenkins, for the biannual U.S.-UK Defense Dialogue.
The high-level discussions, which included experts from both nations, focused on several strategic areas: defense industrial base resilience, technological and capability advancements, wargaming development, and climate resiliency. The dialogue highlighted the critical importance of collaboration between the two allies in these domains.
Key outcomes from the meeting included identifying opportunities for synchronizing the U.S. National Defense Industrial Strategy with the UK’s Defence and Security Industrial Strategy. Both sides expressed a shared commitment to enhancing their defense industrial bases through closer cooperation and innovative approaches.
Progress on the U.S.-UK Joint Climate Action Plan was also a major topic. This plan aims to boost climate resiliency and mitigate the impacts of climate change on defense operations. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to this initiative, recognizing the growing importance of addressing climate-related challenges within the defense sector.
This session marked the fifth defense dialogue between Deputy Secretary Hicks and Permanent Secretary Williams. The last meeting took place in London on November 29, 2023. The biannual U.S.-UK Defense Dialogue is a cornerstone of the special relationship between the two countries, providing a platform for addressing strategic and acquisition issues, as well as fostering technical innovation.
Both sides reflected on the upcoming D-Day anniversary, underscoring the historical ties and shared sacrifices that bind the U.S. and UK. They also looked forward to the 75th NATO Summit in July, where further discussions on mutual defense and security concerns are anticipated.
The leaders concluded the dialogue by reaffirming their commitment to deepening the U.S.-UK special relationship and continuing their collaborative efforts to address shared challenges.–News Desk
