Warsaw – Opposition candidate Karol Nawrocki has secured victory in Poland’s presidential runoff, winning 50.9% of the vote, according to the official results released by the election commission on Sunday.
The highly anticipated runoff drew a record voter turnout of 71.3%, reflecting strong public engagement amid political polarization and economic concerns. Nawrocki’s win marks a significant shift in Poland’s political landscape, breaking the ruling party’s hold on the presidency.
Running on a platform of democratic reforms, judicial independence, and EU alignment, Nawrocki appealed to younger voters and urban populations, while promising to restore institutional checks and balances.
Celebrations erupted in major cities as Nawrocki addressed supporters, calling the result a “victory for all Poles who believe in change, dialogue, and unity.”
Analysts say Nawrocki’s presidency could alter Poland’s relationship with the European Union and reshape domestic policies, particularly in the areas of media freedom, judiciary reform, and civil liberties.
With transition preparations underway, Nawrocki is expected to take office in the coming weeks, facing immediate challenges of national reconciliation and political reform.
