NDP Leader Calls for Difficult Talks on Energy Policy
Canada’s newly elected leader of the New Democratic Party, Avi Lewis, has urged party members to engage in “hard conversations” following criticism of his opposition to new oil and gas development.
Lewis secured the leadership on Sunday in a first-ballot victory. He campaigned on a platform focused on climate action and improving affordability, positioning himself firmly on environmental priorities.
Internal Divisions Surface
However, tensions quickly emerged within the party. Several provincial NDP leaders publicly distanced themselves from Lewis due to his refusal to support Canada’s oil and gas sector.
As a result, the disagreement has highlighted internal divisions at a time when the party is attempting to recover from major losses in the previous federal election.
Leader Defends Open Debate
Despite the criticism, Lewis described the differences of opinion as a positive development. Speaking to reporters on Monday, he said the disagreements reflect a growing and healthy party.
Moreover, he emphasized his commitment to unity. He stated that he will work closely with provincial leaders to expand the party’s national support base. At the same time, he made it clear that he remains open to dialogue with those who oppose his energy policies.
