New York Football: Competing in Futility

The bleak reality for New York football fans—whether rooting for the Giants, Jets, or both—is that the situation may not have hit rock bottom yet. Despite the Giants releasing Daniel Jones after benching him and the Jets firing GM Joe Douglas, things could still worsen. The remainder of the season looms large, and there’s no way to refund season tickets.

A small consolation: the Jets (3-8) have a bye week, while the Giants (2-8) face the Cowboys on Thanksgiving, which is winnable. Still, the real question is which New York team is more pathetic?

The Jets, with no winning season since 2015, bet everything on Aaron Rodgers in 2023. However, with a new GM and coach likely on the horizon, they’ll soon need a long-term strategy—whether Rodgers stays or not. Meanwhile, the Giants, with only two winning seasons since 2016, extended QB Daniel Jones with a $160 million contract, only to see him flop. The Giants also let star running back Saquon Barkley walk, and now he’s thriving with the Eagles.

The Giants’ strategy of prioritizing a quarterback over a game-changing running back has backfired. Their commitment to Jones has been costly, raising questions about GM Joe Schoen’s future. As for the Jets, despite claims of having the best roster in years, their miscalculations with Aaron Rodgers and Zach Wilson have left them in a mess. Even with the talent they have, it’s unclear if top coaches will want to take on the challenge of turning the team around.

Despite all the dysfunction, former Jets coach Rex Ryan remains outspoken, even claiming the team would be undefeated if he were in charge. But with a history of poor seasons, it’s hard to see a bright future for either team. As they both attempt to rebuild, one thing’s for sure: the drama will never stop.
