Iran has temporarily released Nobel Peace laureate Narges Mohammadi, who has been imprisoned since November 2021, for three weeks due to medical reasons, according to her lawyer. The release follows advice from a doctor regarding her health condition after recent surgery. However, Mohammadi’s family and supporters criticized the short duration of the leave and demanded either her immediate release or an extension to three months.
Mohammadi, 52, has been imprisoned multiple times over the past 25 years for her activism against Iran’s use of capital punishment and its mandatory dress code for women. Her recent medical release comes after she underwent surgery to remove a benign tumor and has required regular follow-up checks.
She was also sentenced to an additional year in prison in June for “propaganda against the state” after a trial she refused to attend. Mohammadi, who won the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize, continues to be an outspoken advocate for women’s rights and the abolition of the death penalty in Iran.
