Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has directed senior officials to engage with US President Donald Trump’s team to obtain clarification on a ceasefire proposal put forward by Russia.
In a statement shared on social media platform X, Zelenskyy said Ukraine remains committed to pursuing peace and is actively engaged in diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the ongoing war, now in its fourth year.
He stressed that Kyiv seeks clarity on whether Moscow’s proposal relates only to a brief security arrangement linked to upcoming commemorations in Russia, or whether it signals a broader step toward peace. He reaffirmed Ukraine’s position in favour of a durable and verifiable ceasefire backed by strong security guarantees for civilians.
Zelenskyy also stated that Ukraine is prepared to participate in any credible diplomatic format that could contribute to achieving a lasting settlement.
The comments come after Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly discussed a possible ceasefire beginning May 9 during a call with Trump. The proposed date coincides with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations, which mark the Soviet Union’s role in defeating Nazi Germany in World War Two.
According to the Kremlin, Trump expressed support for the idea during the conversation, describing the occasion as a shared historical commemoration. The White House later indicated that Trump had suggested a temporary pause in hostilities and believed such an arrangement could be possible.
The proposal adds a new diplomatic dimension to ongoing international efforts to address the conflict in Ukraine.
