Nordic, Baltic States Reaffirm Unwavering Backing for Ukraine’s Sovereignty

Eight Nordic and Baltic nations on Saturday underlined that the pursuit of a just and lasting peace in Eastern Europe “must be together with Ukraine,” reaffirming their united stance in support of Kyiv amid ongoing conflict with Russia.
In a joint declaration, the Nordic-Baltic Eight (NB8)—Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Sweden—reiterated their “steadfast” commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and security. The leaders stressed that Ukraine alone holds the right to decide its future and emphasized that no peace process would be legitimate without Kyiv’s full participation.
“Only Ukraine can make decisions concerning its future. No decisions on Ukraine without Ukraine, and no decisions on Europe without Europe,” the statement read.
The NB8 leaders also expressed support for peace efforts, including those initiated by US President Donald Trump following his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska. The meeting marked the first high-level talks between American and Russian leaders in more than four years.
The statement further insisted that any settlement must include a credible ceasefire, strong security guarantees, and binding commitments from transatlantic allies to shield Ukraine against future aggression. The leaders welcomed Trump’s pledge that the US is prepared to take part in providing security assurances for Kyiv.
The countries firmly rejected any restrictions on Ukraine’s armed forces or its defense cooperation with partners, underscoring that Moscow cannot dictate Ukraine’s pathway toward EU and NATO membership.
“We will continue to arm Ukraine and strengthen Europe’s defenses to deter further Russian aggression,” the leaders declared.
The statement reinforced Europe’s growing unity behind Ukraine while linking transatlantic cooperation to wider European security, sending a clear message that Ukraine’s independence remains non-negotiable.
