Pakistan’s PM Shehbaz Sharif Arrives in Switzerland for US-Iran Peace Talks
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has arrived in Switzerland to participate in high-level technical talks between the United States and Iran aimed at sustaining a fragile ceasefire and advancing the implementation of a regional peace agreement.
Sharif, accompanied by Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, is representing Islamabad in discussions taking place in Burgenstock under the framework of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. The talks are considered a key step in efforts to stabilize the ongoing situation in the Middle East.
According to Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry, the negotiations mark the first formal engagement between US and Iranian representatives following the signing of the agreement earlier this week. Delegations from Iran, the United States, and Qatar are also participating in the process.
Pakistan has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the implementation of the understandings reached between Washington and Tehran, emphasizing its role as a facilitator of dialogue and regional peace.
On the sidelines of the talks, Prime Minister Sharif is expected to hold bilateral meetings with representatives from Iran, Qatar, Switzerland, and the United States. These engagements are intended to reinforce Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts and its continued push for long-term stability in the region.
The Islamabad agreement, signed by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, paved the way for structured negotiations in Switzerland following months of regional tensions. Although the initial talks were scheduled earlier, they were postponed before being rescheduled for this weekend.
Pakistan has previously hosted indirect and direct engagement between Washington and Tehran, underscoring its role as a key mediator in efforts to reduce hostilities and promote diplomatic solutions.
