Pentagon Strikes ISIS, Works to De-Escalate Middle East Tensions

Washington, D.C. — The U.S. military continues its efforts to degrade the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), while top defense officials work to de-escalate rising tensions in the Middle East. On September 19, 2024, Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh announced a successful raid by U.S. and Syrian Democratic Forces in Syria, which resulted in the deaths of four ISIS operatives. The operation was aimed at disrupting the group’s capacity to organize attacks against civilians, U.S. citizens, and allies in the region.

“ISIS remains a threat,” Singh emphasized, adding that the U.S. military will persist in working with the Defeat-ISIS coalition to neutralize the organization’s ability to wreak havoc.

Simultaneously, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III is focusing on diplomatic efforts to resolve conflicts in the Middle East. He has spoken with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant multiple times, reiterating U.S. support for Israel and emphasizing the need to deter Iranian-backed extremist groups. Austin’s discussions centered around de-escalating regional tensions and securing a ceasefire on the Israel-Lebanon border, where ongoing conflict has displaced civilians.

“We believe the best way to reduce tensions in the region is through diplomatic means,” Singh said, stressing that the U.S. is working tirelessly to prevent a broader conflict. Austin remains committed to deterring adversaries while advocating for peace and stability in the region.–News Desk
