Poland has signed a major 8 billion zloty ($2.2 billion) framework agreement to purchase several thousand domestically manufactured Piorun air defense missile launchers and missiles, according to Polish media reports.
The agreement was signed at the MESKO production facility in Skarzysko-Kamienna, south-central Poland. The deal includes thousands of missile systems and launchers, along with related training and logistical support.
More than 80% of the equipment will be delivered to Poland’s armed forces, while the remaining portion will be supplied to Lithuania, Latvia and Norway through the European Union’s Security Action for Europe SAFE program, which provides financing for joint defense procurement.
Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said the agreement highlights Poland’s growing importance as both a producer and exporter of military equipment.
He emphasized that Poland has the potential to become a major defense exporter and a leader not only in military spending but also in domestic defense manufacturing.
The minister also noted that the agreement was unusual because the procurement consortium was made up of allied governments rather than private companies, marking a significant step in international defense cooperation.
The contract was concluded between Poland’s state Armaments Agency and MESKO SA, a Polish defense manufacturer responsible for producing the Piorun system.
The Piorun is a very short-range air defense system designed to protect against low-altitude aerial threats, including aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and drones.
