PTI Releases List of Missing Supporters as Police Deny Firing Claims
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has issued a list of supporters it claims are missing following protests in Rawalpindi. The demonstrations, which escalated into clashes with law enforcement, were part of PTI’s broader campaign for the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. PTI alleges that security forces unlawfully detained several participants, while some family members fear their loved ones are unaccounted for.
Rawalpindi police denied allegations of opening fire during the protest, insisting their actions were limited to crowd control measures such as tear gas and baton charges. Authorities claimed they acted in accordance with the law, dismissing accusations of excessive force. A police spokesperson stated, “No shots were fired, and no deaths resulted from police action.”
Despite these assurances, PTI leaders argue that the government is attempting to intimidate supporters and suppress dissent. “This is a targeted operation against our workers,” a senior PTI official said, urging human rights organizations to intervene.
Human rights groups have expressed concern over the rising reports of detentions and alleged disappearances of political activists in Pakistan. Independent observers called for transparency in investigations and urged the government to uphold fundamental freedoms, including the right to peaceful assembly.
The protests, sparked by Imran Khan’s continued imprisonment, have intensified political tensions across the country. As the standoff continues, the PTI has vowed to intensify its movement, demanding accountability for alleged abuses. Meanwhile, the government maintains its stance on law and order, emphasizing the importance of stability during a critical time for the nation.
The situation remains fluid as both sides escalate rhetoric, adding to the volatility of Pakistan’s political landscape.
