Russian Arctic LNG 2 Cuts Gas Output to Near Zero

Gas production at Russia’s Arctic LNG 2 project has dropped drastically, averaging just 0.4 million cubic meters per day from November 1-10, marking a decline of over 90% compared to October levels. This is the lowest production since at least September 2023. In contrast, during the pre-commissioning and commissioning phases in late 2023, the fields produced between 2 million and nearly 14 million cubic meters daily.

The Arctic LNG 2 project, crucial to Russia’s LNG export goals and development of the Northern Sea Route, has been heavily affected by Western sanctions over the past year. While its design capacity is 19.8 million tonnes of LNG annually, only one production line, with a capacity of 6.6 million tonnes per year, is currently operational.

The plant has halted liquefaction operations due to sanctions that hinder the transportation and sale of LNG. Russia has been using a network of shell companies, spanning from Dubai to China, to manage gas exports from Arctic LNG 2.
