Germany has reported a sharp rise in Russian spy drone incursions, with airspace violations skyrocketing over the past year, according to a Wednesday report by BILD.
The latest breach occurred before Christmas over Rhineland-Palatinate, a southwestern state hosting critical military facilities. A spokesperson for the state’s Interior Ministry revealed that “approximately 100 cases were reported to police departments in 2024 alone.”
The ministry noted a significant uptick in the deployment of large drones to surveil sensitive sites, attributing it to Russia’s hybrid warfare tactics. Despite the scale of activity, no drones in Rhineland-Palatinate have been intercepted, underscoring the challenge of countering these incursions.
This revelation aligns with warnings from Bruno Kahl, head of Germany’s foreign intelligence agency, BND. Speaking at the German Council on Foreign Relations in late November, Kahl stated, “Russia is actively preparing for a military confrontation with NATO within the next five years.”
He highlighted that Russia is undergoing its most extensive military overhaul since 2008, with substantial investments in advanced weapon systems, signaling strategic preparation for potential conflict with Western alliances.
These developments, coupled with the increasing drone activity, reflect mounting geopolitical tensions and the evolving landscape of modern warfare, where surveillance and hybrid tactics play a pivotal role. German authorities continue to investigate the incidents, emphasizing heightened vigilance as relations with Moscow remain fraught.
