International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) President Mirjana Spoljaric wrapped up her inaugural visit to Türkiye on Tuesday, following stops in Lebanon and Syria, the organization announced Wednesday.
During her visit to Ankara, Spoljaric underscored the importance of humanitarian aid and adherence to international humanitarian law in easing the suffering caused by global conflicts, according to an ICRC statement.
She met with representatives from Türkiye’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Turkish Red Crescent (Kizilay), emphasizing Türkiye’s significant contribution to global humanitarian efforts.
“Türkiye has consistently played a pivotal role in mitigating the impact of conflicts and championing respect for humanitarian principles,” Spoljaric stated.
She praised the enduring partnership between the ICRC and Kizilay, calling it essential to ongoing relief initiatives. “I am eager to strengthen our collaboration further, especially as the world faces an ever-growing toll on civilians due to armed conflicts,” she added.
The visit highlighted Türkiye’s commitment to alleviating human suffering and reinforced the joint efforts of the ICRC and Kizilay in advancing humanitarian work in conflict zones.
