GENEVA
The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Wednesday the successful evacuation of 10 patients from Gaza to Jordan and the United States for advanced medical care.
“WHO, in collaboration with partners, facilitated the transfer of four patients with five companions to Jordan and six pediatric patients with five companions to the US for specialized treatment,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus shared on X.
Tedros highlighted the dire need for further medical evacuations, noting that over 12,000 individuals in Gaza urgently require life-saving transfers. He called on Israeli authorities to expedite approvals for medical evacuations, increase the rate of authorizations, and open all available corridors and crossings to ensure safe passage for patients.
The crisis in Gaza remains catastrophic, with Israeli military actions reportedly claiming nearly 46,000 lives—predominantly women and children—since October 7, 2023. Despite global calls for a ceasefire, including a UN Security Council resolution, the assault continues unabated.
The WHO has reiterated the importance of humanitarian corridors and international support to address the escalating medical emergency, emphasizing the critical need for immediate action to prevent further loss of life.
