Russian Strikes Cut Power Across Multiple Ukrainian Regions
Power Outages Reported in Cherkasy, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, and Sumy
Ukraine reported on Monday that consumers in several regions lost electricity following overnight Russian strikes on energy infrastructure. The country’s power grid operator, Ukrenergo, said the attacks disrupted the power supply in Cherkasy, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, and Sumy regions.
Restoration efforts are ongoing “wherever the security situation allows,” the operator added, noting that energy demand has surged due to colder temperatures and fewer restrictive measures in some regions.
Additional Power Disruptions and Repair Efforts
Ukrenergo also reported that 162 settlements in Odesa, Mykolaiv, and Kirovohrad were fully or partially without power on Monday morning. Repair teams are actively working to restore damaged lines.
Zelenskyy Reports Focused Russian Attacks
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on US social media platform X that new Russian attacks targeted energy facilities in frontline and border communities over the past day. He clarified that no major strikes focused solely on energy infrastructure occurred after a coordination call on the situation. Instead, the Russian military targeted logistics, particularly railway facilities in Dnipro and Zaporizhzhia regions.
Zelenskyy confirmed that energy workers and repair crews restored the system to its pre-technical-failure state, but warned that “all challenges remain serious” due to ongoing attacks and cold weather.
Air Defenses and Ongoing Security Challenges
Ukraine’s air force reported shooting down 157 of 171 drones launched by Russia overnight and noted a ballistic missile launch, providing limited details.
US President Donald Trump reportedly asked Russian President Vladimir Putin last Thursday to halt strikes on Kyiv and other cities during extreme cold weather, a request confirmed by Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, though it was unclear if Putin complied.
Damage to Industrial Facilities
Private energy company DTEK reported a second attack on its coal enterprise in the Dnipropetrovsk region since Sunday, damaging administrative buildings. Earlier, a Russian strike on a bus carrying DTEK miners killed 12 people and injured 16 others. Russian authorities have not commented on the latest developments.
