Saudi Arabia Extends an Olive Branch to Syria: FM’s Landmark Visit

DAMASCUS: In a historic turn of events, Saudi Arabia has pledged support to Syria’s transitional government during Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan’s first visit to Damascus since Bashar al-Assad’s downfall.

Prince Faisal met interim leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, signaling Riyadh’s intention to assist Syria in rebuilding its war-ravaged infrastructure and lobbying for the lifting of international sanctions. The Saudi diplomat emphasized the need to expedite the freezing and removal of sanctions, noting “positive signals” from the United States and European Union.

Sharaa, eager for Gulf investments, stressed that lifting restrictions would pave the way for trade, job creation, and infrastructure restoration. His sentiments echo Saudi Arabia’s commitment to fostering economic revival and stability in Syria.

The visit also reflects Riyadh’s growing influence in reshaping Syria’s regional ties. In April 2023, Saudi Arabia played a pivotal role in reinstating Assad’s government to the Arab League after over a decade of strained relations.

However, efforts to curb Syria’s infamous captagon trade, a lucrative amphetamine industry once thriving under Assad, remain a challenge. The new Syrian leadership has seized several factories producing the drug but struggles to fully dismantle the network.

Saudi Arabia, already providing humanitarian aid, is seen as a key partner in Syria’s economic recovery. This renewed alliance aims to rebuild bridges and turn the page on years of discord, offering Syria a fresh start in its quest for stability and prosperity.
