Powerful 6.3 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Central Colombia

A strong 6.3 magnitude earthquake shook central Colombia early Sunday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The quake occurred at 8:08 a.m. local time at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles, approximately 10.5 miles from Paratebueno, a town about 116 miles southeast of the capital, Bogotá.

Residents in several major cities, including Medellín, Cali, and Manizales, reported feeling the tremors. The Colombian Geological Service recorded multiple aftershocks ranging from magnitude 4.0 to 4.6 in the same area minutes later.

The National Unit for Disaster Risk Management is currently assessing the situation across affected municipalities. Initial reports indicate no casualties or significant damage.

Social media videos from Bogotá showed people leaving offices and homes to seek safety. Footage from rural areas confirmed no visible damage.

“It was a big scare,” said Carlos Alberto Ruiz, a Bogotá resident who evacuated his apartment with his family and dog.
