Tanzania, Botswana, and Mozambique earn 2025 AFCON Spots

Borussia Dortmund’s Serhou Guirassy will miss the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after Tanzania’s 1-0 win over Guinea on Tuesday, which saw them secure a spot at Guinea’s expense.

Botswana and Mozambique also clinched their places in the 24-team tournament, completing the qualification lineup. Mozambique defeated Guinea-Bissau 2-1 thanks to Stanley Ratifo’s second-half goal, eliminating Guinea-Bissau and securing a runner-up finish behind Mali, who thrashed Eswatini 6-0 in their final match.

Botswana earned a 1-1 draw with Egypt, securing second place in Group C with 8 points, one ahead of Mauritania, who defeated Cape Verde 1-0 in their final match. Egypt topped the group with 14 points.

Guinea needed a draw in their final Group H game against Tanzania but were defeated 1-0 by a 61st-minute header from Simon Msuva, pushing Tanzania into second place behind Congo to qualify. This marks Tanzania’s fourth AFCON appearance.

Ghana, four-time champions, failed to qualify for the first time since 2004, ending their campaign with a 2-1 loss to Niger. Sudan and Benin also secured qualification, finishing second in their respective groups.

Comoros, Zambia, Mali, and Zimbabwe secured their spots last week, while other automatic qualifiers included Morocco, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Algeria, Congo, Cameroon, Senegal, and Angola.

The tournament will be hosted by Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
