President-elect Donald Trump has nominated former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi as his pick for U.S. Attorney General, following Matt Gaetz’s withdrawal from the role. Trump praised Bondi for her extensive experience as a prosecutor, her efforts to combat drug trafficking, and her work in addressing the fentanyl crisis. Bondi, 59, is a longtime Trump ally and was one of his defense attorneys during his first impeachment trial. She also served on Trump’s Opioid and Drug Abuse Commission and supported him during his 2024 campaign. Bondi was Florida’s Attorney General from 2011 to 2019, the first woman to hold the position. Trump expressed confidence in her ability to refocus the Department of Justice on fighting crime. Bondi’s nomination is expected to face less resistance in the Senate compared to Gaetz, who withdrew amid sexual misconduct allegations.
