Trump nominee withdraws from State Department role after criticism over race remarks

Nomination ends amid political opposition

Donald Trump’s nominee for a senior position at the United States Department of State has withdrawn from consideration after lawmakers raised concerns about his past remarks on race.

Jeremy Carl announced the decision Tuesday in a statement on X. Carl had been nominated to serve as assistant secretary of state for international organization affairs.

Carl explained that although he had support from the president and Marco Rubio, his nomination required stronger backing in the Senate.

Lack of support from senators

Carl said the confirmation process also depends on support from Republican members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. However, he acknowledged that this level of support was not available.

He noted that Senate Democrats had unanimously opposed his nomination. As a result, he decided to withdraw rather than spend more time trying to secure approval.

“I recognize the political reality,” Carl said. He added that he did not want the administration to spend additional time and effort trying to reverse the committee’s decision.

Concerns raised during confirmation hearing

During Carl’s confirmation hearing last month, members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee questioned him about previous public statements related to race and religion.

Several lawmakers expressed concern about those remarks and asked him to explain his views.

Schumer welcomes decision

Following the announcement, Chuck Schumer welcomed Carl’s withdrawal.

Schumer strongly criticized Carl and said he was relieved the nomination had ended. The Democratic leader also accused the Trump administration of selecting controversial nominees for senior positions.

In addition, Schumer said he would continue opposing nominees whom he believes hold racist or antisemitic views.
