WASHINGTON | 27 February 2026
US President Signals Potential Shift in Cuba Policy
Donald Trump on Friday suggested that the United States could consider what he described as a “friendly takeover” of Cuba, citing the island nation’s severe economic difficulties.
Speaking to reporters before departing for a visit to Texas, Trump said Cuban officials are currently in discussions with Washington. He emphasized that the Cuban government faces significant financial and economic challenges.
Ongoing Talks Between Washington and Havana
According to Trump, the Cuban leadership has reached out for support as the country struggles with shortages and limited resources. He claimed that Cuba lacks funds, oil, and food, and described the situation as a “nation in deep trouble.”
Furthermore, Trump reiterated that Marco Rubio is leading the discussions on behalf of the United States. He added that the talks remain ongoing.
Longstanding US-Cuba Tensions
Trump also reflected on decades of strained relations between the two countries. He noted that calls for change in Cuba have persisted for many years and suggested that developments could occur soon.
While he did not outline specific policy steps, his remarks signaled a possible shift in Washington’s approach toward Havana.
