Trump Threatens Major Tariffs on EU Imports, Targets Apple iPhones
WASHINGTON — May 23, 2025 — Former U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 50% tariff on European Union imports and a 25% tax on Apple iPhones manufactured abroad if elected again.
Trump’s remarks, aimed at reducing the U.S. trade deficit and pressuring U.S. companies to relocate manufacturing, have drawn concern from economists and global trade observers. Apple, which assembles many of its products in China and other countries, would face significant cost increases under the proposed tariff.
The European Commission has not responded publicly but is awaiting a scheduled call between EU trade chief Maroš Šefčovič and U.S. trade representative Katherine Greer. The conversation is expected to address the escalating trade tensions.
Analysts warn that such tariffs could trigger retaliatory measures from the EU and further strain transatlantic economic relations.
