US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed that the Strait of Hormuz should remain open during high-level talks held in Beijing, according to a statement released by the White House on Thursday.
The meeting, described by US officials as constructive, focused heavily on regional security, economic cooperation, and energy stability. The White House said both leaders discussed measures to strengthen trade relations, expand access for American companies in China, and encourage greater Chinese investment in US industries.
Senior executives from several major American corporations reportedly attended part of the discussions, highlighting the economic importance of the summit.
A major topic during the talks was the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy corridor. The White House stated that both sides agreed on the importance of keeping the waterway open to ensure uninterrupted energy supplies worldwide. President Xi also voiced opposition to any militarization of the strait or attempts to impose transit charges on vessels using the route.
According to the statement, Xi expressed interest in increasing purchases of American oil as part of efforts to reduce China’s long-term dependence on the strategically sensitive passage.
The two leaders also reiterated their shared position that Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons. In addition, they discussed ongoing cooperation to curb the flow of fentanyl precursors into the United States and expand Chinese imports of American agricultural goods.
Meanwhile, China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency reported that Xi warned relations between Washington and Beijing could face tensions or conflict if the Taiwan issue is not managed carefully.
Xi further described economic ties between the two countries as mutually beneficial and emphasized the importance of maintaining long-term strategic stability. Both governments agreed to pursue a framework aimed at guiding bilateral relations over the next several years, a move Beijing said would benefit both nations and the wider international community.
