DAMASCUS: Two children were injured after Israeli forces allegedly opened fire near a group of civilians in southern Syria’s Daraa province, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
The incident reportedly occurred on Monday in the village of Jamla, located in the Yarmouk Basin area of western Daraa, where the children were struck during gunfire directed toward local residents.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear, and Israeli authorities had not immediately commented on the reported incident. Syrian officials also did not provide further details about the events or the condition of the injured children.
The latest incident comes amid ongoing tensions along the Syria-Israel frontier, where southern regions have witnessed repeated Israeli military operations, including cross-border incursions, airstrikes, searches and the establishment of military positions.
Following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s government in December 2024, Israel declared the 1974 disengagement agreement with Syria no longer applicable and expanded its presence into the UN-monitored buffer zone. Syria’s current administration has repeatedly stated that it remains committed to the terms of the agreement.
Despite the change in Syria’s leadership, Israeli military operations have continued in parts of the country, contributing to heightened regional tensions and concerns over civilian safety.
