Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III has directed the deployment of additional naval forces to the Middle East to bolster the United States’ commitment to Israel’s defense in response to escalating regional tensions. This announcement was made by Pentagon Press Secretary Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder during a briefing today.
The reinforcements include the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group, which is equipped with F-35C Lightning II stealth jets, and the ballistic missile submarine USS Georgia, now en route to the Central Command region. This move follows a Sunday phone call between Austin and Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant, where Austin reaffirmed the United States’ dedication to Israel’s security and the enhancement of U.S. military capabilities in the Middle East given the current hostile environment.
Ryder highlighted that these newly deployed assets will augment the capabilities already provided by the USS Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group, which is currently operating in the region. He emphasized that these adjustments in U.S. military posture are aimed at improving force protection, increasing support for Israel’s defense, and ensuring preparedness for various contingencies.
When questioned about the possibility of an imminent attack in the region, Ryder declined to speculate, stating, “The point here is that we recognize the tensions in the region. We’re doing everything we can to deter aggression, prevent conflict from escalating, and protect our forces while also defending Israel, should it be attacked.”
The conversation between Austin and Gallant also covered Israel’s ongoing operations in Gaza, emphasizing the importance of minimizing civilian casualties, progressing toward a ceasefire, securing the release of hostages, and deterring aggression from other regional actors.
Additionally, Ryder addressed a recent attack on U.S. and coalition forces by an unmanned aerial system in Syria last Friday. He noted that while several personnel sustained minor injuries, including smoke inhalation, swift and effective preemptive measures helped limit the impact of the drones.
