Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh announced that U.S. military aid is reaching Ukraine as its military battles Russian forces in the Kharkiv region, Ukraine’s second-largest city. Singh stated that the Russian attacks on Kharkiv were anticipated and that Ukrainian soldiers are fiercely resisting the incursions.
Following Congress’s approval of a supplemental aid package on April 24, U.S. military systems are being delivered to Ukraine. President Joe Biden announced a $1 billion assistance package to address Ukraine’s urgent security needs, and an additional $400 million in aid was announced on Friday.
The latest aid package includes air defense systems, artillery rounds, armored vehicles, and antitank weapons to support Ukraine’s immediate battlefield requirements. Singh acknowledged that the Russian attacks have made some gains, but emphasized the U.S. commitment to providing Ukraine with necessary resources.
Singh highlighted the quick delivery of aid due to the Defense Department’s pre-positioning of supplies before Congressional approval. She praised the bravery of Ukrainian forces, noting their ability to hold territory and push back Russian advances.
Despite the delay in passing the supplemental aid package, which led to ammunition rationing and some territorial losses in Eastern Ukraine, European allies stepped in to provide crucial support. Singh commended these allies for supplying Ukraine with artillery and defenses during the interim period.
“We believe that Ukrainians continue to prove themselves on the battlefield,” Singh said, reiterating the U.S. dedication to supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.–News Desk
