KYIV – Ukraine’s security service (SBU) announced on Thursday that it had uncovered and dismantled a suspected spy network allegedly operated by Hungarian military intelligence. Two former Ukrainian soldiers have been arrested in connection with the plot.
According to officials, the individuals, described by the SBU as “traitors,” used their prior military training and connections to infiltrate restricted defense sites and collect sensitive intelligence in Ukraine’s western region bordering Hungary.
Authorities allege that the suspects passed classified defense-related data to foreign handlers. The arrests are part of Ukraine’s broader counterintelligence efforts aimed at neutralizing foreign espionage threats amid ongoing regional tensions.
The SBU emphasized that the operation highlights the persistent risk of foreign infiltration and reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding national security and sovereignty. Investigations are ongoing to identify any further links or operatives involved in the network.
