Zelensky Visits Saudi Arabia to Offer Ukraine Drone Expertise
RIYADH – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Saudi Arabia on Thursday, emphasizing Ukraine’s expertise in drone technology as a means to strengthen security in the Gulf region.
Enhancing Security Through Drone Technology
Zelensky highlighted the importance of energy security and stable global markets, stating, “This matters because energy security – and the cost of living, particularly in Europe – depends on Gulf oil, gas, and other resources.” He noted that Ukraine possesses not only advanced drone technology but also extensive experience in integrating drones with radars, aviation, and other air defense systems.
Seeking Support for Ukraine’s Defense
In exchange for sharing expertise, Zelensky seeks assistance to bolster Ukraine’s defense against the ongoing Russian invasion. He told Le Monde, “We would like Middle Eastern states to give us an opportunity to strengthen ourselves. They have certain air defense missiles which we lack, and that’s what we hope to reach a deal on.”
Gulf States Show Interest
Several Ukrainian drone companies confirmed to the BBC that Gulf countries have approached them for assistance. However, these companies are awaiting formal approval from the Ukrainian government before proceeding.
Zelensky also thanked allies willing to collaborate on regional security, stating, “Important meetings are scheduled. We appreciate the support of those ready to work with us, and we support them too,” via a social media message.
