EU Foreign Policy Chief Calls on US to Pressure Russia to End Ukraine War
BRUSSELS – European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on Thursday urged the United States to apply pressure on Russia to stop Iranian-backed attacks in the Middle East and bring an end to the war in Ukraine.
Conflicts in Ukraine and Middle East Linked
Kallas stressed that the situations in Ukraine and the Middle East are interconnected. Speaking in France before a G7 foreign affairs meeting, she said, “If America wants Iran to stop its attacks in the Middle East, it must also pressure Russia to prevent them from providing support.”
She explained that Russia is reportedly supplying Iran with intelligence and drone assistance, enabling strikes on neighboring countries and US military bases.
Urgent Need to End the Ukraine War
Kallas highlighted the daily escalation of Russian attacks on civilians and infrastructure in Ukraine. She noted that rising oil prices are allowing Russia to fund the war further.
She said, “By increasing our bilateral support and coordinating with the Americans to pressure Russia, we could achieve an end to the war and establish long-term sustainable peace.”
Diplomatic Solutions Must Include Russian Concessions
Regarding peace negotiations, Kallas warned against pressuring Kyiv to cede territory. She emphasized that Russia seeks to gain regions it could not conquer militarily over the past 12 years, calling such demands part of a “Russian negotiation trap.”
She added, “This approach is clearly wrong. Russia demands territories that have never been theirs, and we must avoid falling into their trap.
