German Peace Initiative Opposes Volkswagen’s Potential Defense Deal with Israel
BERLIN – A German peace group on Thursday voiced strong opposition to reports that Volkswagen may partner with an Israeli defense firm to produce missile defense system components at its Osnabruck plant.
OFRI Calls for Civilian Production
The Osnabruck Peace Initiative (OFRI) urged Volkswagen to drop talks with Rafael Advanced Defence Systems. The group emphasized that the plant should remain focused on civilian vehicle production rather than military projects.
Marie Dominique Guyard, OFRI spokesperson, said, “We oppose arms deliveries to warring parties and believe wars should end through negotiation. Volkswagen’s interest in military projects raises serious concerns.”
Potential Military Use of Osnabruck Plant
Reports indicate Volkswagen may repurpose the Osnabruck plant—set to face closure in 2027 after current passenger car production ends—to manufacture components for Israel’s Iron Dome system, including launchers, transport vehicles, and power generators.
Guyard highlighted that Osnabruck, historically known for the Peace of Westphalia treaties of 1648, should maintain its legacy of peace. She added, “If a major company in this city becomes an arms manufacturer, it would signal a troubling shift toward militarizing the local economy.”
Civilian Alternatives Highlighted
OFRI noted that the plant has advanced capabilities and could produce civilian vehicles, such as minibuses manufactured there in the past. Guyard stated, “Investing in public transportation and civilian products is a better use of resources than weapons production.”
The group is also urging local and state politicians, along with the trade union representing Osnabruck workers, to push Volkswagen toward peaceful production.
Volkswagen Responds
Volkswagen has not officially confirmed any deal with Rafael Advanced Defence Systems. A company spokesperson told Anadolu, “We are exploring options for the Osnabruck plant after 2027. No final decisions have been made, and weapons production remains excluded from our plans.
