UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations has welcomed the launch of pilot zone operations in three villages in southern Lebanon, describing the initiative as a positive step toward strengthening stability along the Israel-Lebanon border.
Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said the pilot operations had begun in the villages of Froun, Srifa and Zawtar Al-Gharbiya under a trilateral coordination framework involving Lebanon, Israel and the United Nations.
Dujarric encouraged both Lebanon and Israel to continue working toward the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. The resolution calls for a ceasefire, respect for Lebanon’s sovereignty and measures to maintain peace and security along the border.
The UN said continued cooperation between the parties is essential to reducing tensions and preventing further violence in the region.
The announcement comes amid ongoing instability in southern Lebanon, where military operations have continued to fuel humanitarian concerns. According to Lebanese authorities, thousands of people have been killed or injured and more than one million residents have been displaced since the escalation of hostilities earlier this year.
The United Nations has repeatedly called for restraint and renewed diplomatic efforts to prevent a wider regional conflict.
