UN Chief Urges Protection of Asylum Rights at Global Refugee Forum
New York — United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called on countries to uphold the right to seek asylum and provide stronger support to nations hosting large refugee populations.
In a video message delivered to the Global Refugee Forum, Guterres stressed that protecting refugees is a shared international responsibility. He warned that growing displacement worldwide demands urgent and coordinated action.
Growing Pressure on Host Countries
The Secretary-General highlighted that low- and middle-income countries continue to host the majority of the world’s refugees. As conflicts, climate shocks, and instability intensify, he said these nations face increasing social and economic strain.
Therefore, Guterres urged wealthier states to expand financial aid, resettlement opportunities, and development support. He noted that such assistance helps host communities remain stable while allowing refugees to live with dignity.
Commitment to International Law
Guterres also reaffirmed the importance of international refugee law. He emphasized that people fleeing war, persecution, and violence must not be turned away or denied access to asylum procedures.
At the same time, he encouraged governments to counter misinformation and discrimination against refugees. According to him, inclusive policies strengthen societies and promote long-term peace.
Call for Collective Action
Concluding his message, the UN chief called for renewed global cooperation. He said the Global Refugee Forum offers a critical platform for turning promises into concrete action and ensuring that responsibility is shared fairly.
